Of Birthdays

Birthday Cake

I didn’t join the 27 Club, after all. Today’s my birthday, and I’ve made it to 28.

Honestly, I’ve never thought about my life this far. I didn’t know what 27 was supposed to mean or feel like, and I’ve no clue as to what 28 should. I made it through all the 366 days since last year, but I still can’t tell you what 27 is like. It’s different, but it’s more the same. I’m guessing 28 will stick to that formula.

I never done good things
I never done bad things
I never did anything out of the blue

– David Bowie, “Ashes to Ashes”

“Changes” by David Bowie had been on my mind lately, hoping that it will somehow translate into life. But, “Ashes to Ashes” has taken the spot today, I don’t quite know why, except perhaps, the above few lines. If 28 can change, and it has to, it will have to negate the above negations. Otherwise, it’s just a number. It’s just another day.

To digress to other events on this day, we have:

George Clooney’s birthday
Sigmund Freud’s 160th birthday
International No Diet Day
National Beverage Day
No Homework Day
No Pants Day, among several other bizarre holidays.

Therefore, though it’s practically impossible for you and me to celebrate all of the above and more, here’s what I’d like you to do:

Take a glass of your favourite beverage, forget about calories and get a slice of your favourite cake in front of you (optional: no trousers, no homework, a copy of The Interpretation of Dreams and a George Clooney movie marathon) and just celebrate the fact that we’ve all made it this far.

All of us.

I honestly didn’t think I would, and I would have to give you significant responsibility for bringing me here. I’ve been writing this blog for nearly two years now, a fact that seems absolutely unfathomable to me. And yet, you made me do it. And you made me go on. I haven’t had any cake yet, though the day isn’t over, but I raise a glass of Fanta to you (not my favourite beverage, but will have to do for now) and say, thank you. Just, Thank You.

I found out yesterday that “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol has recently turned ten years old. I don’t know why that fact possessed me enough to make a karaoke video of the song. But, as a further birthday indulgence, here it is:

To quote Kate Bush (yet again): Please, be kind to my mistakes.

In other words, please don’t go Simon Cowell on me. I’m not about to hit the charts anytime soon.

Skeletons in love are absolutely hilarious and absolutely romantic.

Thank you, again.

  1. Happy Birthday!
I hope you have a wonderful day full of David Bowie and cake! Lots of cake!

And you have a lovely voice, thank you for sharing that. I heard no mistakes.

    1. Ah, Sourgirl, you’re too kind! No cake yet, though there has been plenty of Bowie. Was supposed to go watch Captain America: Civil War, but that didn’t happen. Please do have cake and a beverage of your choice on my behalf!

  2. Happy Birthday!
And well sung – if people complain about mistakes, I refer to the Importance of Being Earnest line, anyone can play accurately, but I play with such wonderful feeling!

    1. Ah, I think the character was called Algernon, if I’m not mistaken! I did love that character, had so many of the famous Wilde witticisms. I’ve always had a lot of heart for music, just not enough talent.

I think this must be something you share too – I can’t fathom how people have a random playlist on their ipods, and not care who it’s by, what style it is, what are the arrangements etc. I can’t stand such generalized indifference to music! What’s the point if there’s no heart in it?

    1. Thank you! I sometimes feel like re-doing certain ages too, and then I remember some of the embarrassing events in them, and I’m more than happy to have come far from that! Getting older isn’t so bad!

  3. I know I am late to the No-Pants-George-Clooney celebration but I want to wish you a very Happy Birthday, Amrita!
    ~Tamara ❤

  4. I’m late with everything lately! I was in Las Vegas on business last week and missed so much. Your blog being one of my top ‘go to’ ones, I figured I should catch up. Happy Belated Birthday!
