500, 1000

Pedants enter PIN.
ATM Cartoon

On many a black morning
And star-speckled night
I stand here, inches wide
From an Automated Teller Machine
As pink notes keep drifting by.

Plastic is Drastic
But, it’s all Fantastic
Even if I’m 5% of The Kind.

Come all ye people
Gather around
Hand your jangly 10’s
And fly your 1000 rupee
Paper planes.

It’s all a brain drain
Nobody’s gain
No future to leave behind
With phantom 500’s
Swirling in your mind.

Black money, white soul
A 1000 holes you devise.

Punch drunk money
It ain’t funny
Though we’re all laughing
‘Cause we can’t cry.

28 oranges
Tomatoes five
He’s got sacks full
Of 500 rupee bills
To tear away or hide.

(N. B. Written about the demonetisation drive in India, i.e. returning old 500 and 1000 rupee notes and going cashless or using other denominations of money in place of these highly convenient ones. This has caused people all over the country to be in endless queues in banks and ATMs for most of this month.)

  1. I hadn’t heard of the demonetisation drive – but at times like this when people are frustrated, that’s when we need the poets & artists to create their art.

Or more articulately put by Toni Morrison, “This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak, we write, we do language. That is how civilizations heal.”

    1. That’s a brilliant quote, Geoff! It has been extremely problematic, especially on a micro level, with small businesses and vendors suffering the most. I’ve had to cut down on supplies from what you would call a farmers’ market due to lack of cash. Imagine having to think twice about how much fruit and veg you want to get! Having to think about Bob Dylan instead for a speaking engagement I had this week made me look at things from an angle that is different from general frustration. Hence, a poem!
